Tonight it is reported that Robertshaw Racing Chevrolet driver Matt Allison is to pull out for the forseeable future after monetary and sponsorship issues. The result of the withdrawal with immediate effect leaves Robertshaw Racing with a spare seat alongside Harry Vaulkhard and Alan Taylor to be filled for a driver with sufficient backing or budget.
Allison, who made his BTCC debut last year with Motorbase Performance, told Crash.net “I’m absolutely gutted by it. It was always going to be tight on money this year as a major sponsor we were talking to before the season was hit by the credit crunch, so we knew we would have to work on it as the season went on. We hoped to have something in place for Thruxton, but it hasn’t come off and we’ve had to call time on it. I didn’t want to go there half-heartedly and be worried that if I had an accident then it could bankrupt me.”
After the Chevrolet’s of Robertshaw Racing were handed a 20 kilogram weight reduction for Donington Park last time out it was looking hopeful that an upturn in fortunes was coming. This was reinforced by both cars qualifying in the top ten for the first time of the season, but in the race fortunes turned dramatically as Matt Allison crashed out of race one and was unable to take part in either race two or three.
Allison added: “There is a chance that we will be back out later in the season but it will depend on whether Robertshaw are able to bring someone in with budget for the rest of the year as I can’t expect Joe and Gary to just slot me back in if they find that person.
“If this is the end of the season for us, then it will be a chance to focus on getting a full budget in place for 2009 as I don’t feel like I’ve shown my best in the BTCC yet.”
The withdrawal of Allison leaves robertshaw heading to Thruxton this weekend with only Harry Vaulkhard in the remaining Chevrolet and Alan Taylor in the Honda Integra. It remains to be seen if a driver can be found for the second Chevrolet Lacetti for the remainder of the season.
