With the mid-season break now well and truly upon us, we took the time to analyse rounds 1-15 and highlight the biggest winners and losers of the season so far.
Most outright victories:
Giovanardi: 4
Turkington: 3
Onslow-Cole: 2
Plato: 2
Jackson: 1
Neal: 1
Shedden: 1
Turner: 1
As in 2007, Giovanardi clearly leads the way on outright wins after getting his season off to the perfect start with double wins at Brands Hatch. In terms of manufacturers, Vauxhall have taken 7 wins so far with their extremely strong driver line-up, BMW follow behind with 4 wins and SEAT with 3. Shedden has taken only the one win so far and will be looking to lift the team’s victory tally, which stood at a much more impressive 5 wins in 2007.
Most race retirements:
Bell: 5
Doyle: 5
A Jordan: 5
Oliver: 5
Stockton: 5
Taylor: 5
Chilton: 4
Collard: 4
George: 4
Jelley: 4
M Jordan: 4
It’s no surprise to see independent drivers filling the top six places in terms of the number of retirements. With these teams running on a smaller budgets than the works and larger teams, it is much more difficult to repair accident damage between races, or to have spare parts at the ready if anything fails. Both Oliver and Stockton have had their fair share of issues during the first half of the season - many of these coming with the unreliable Lexus IS200. Also of note is both Jordan’s having notched up 9 retirements between them, the team perhaps struggling to run a two car effort as efficiently as the single car team of the past two seasons.
Most race finishes:
Giovanardi: 15
Turkington: 15
Hughes: 14
Jones: 14
Neal: 14
Plato: 14
Kizilirmak: 13
Shedden: 13
Vaulkhard: 13
No surprises at the top here, with championship leader and Giovanardi able to put his success down to winning as much as he can to consistency. The Italian has stayed out of trouble when others have been caught up in it, knowing when to back off and settle for points and when to push for the win. The Vectra’s excellent reliability has also helped immensely.
Whilst both Turkington and Plato appear to have good finishing records, both drivers have limped accross the line well outside the top ten on several occasions.
