It was a race with action and controversy from the very start. Tom Chilton cut the chicane on the opening lap and made heavy contact with Steven Kane, eliminating both drivers from the race and bringing out the safety car.
Things would calm down later, and Adam Jones drove strongly to take second ahead of BTCC podium debutant Andrew Jordan. The Team Eurotech driver had his work cut out to keep that position right until the very end, with Mat Jackson and Matt Neal close behind.
Race two victor Colin Turkington finished 7th, with fellow BMW racer Rob Collard just behind after a disastrous race two.
Jason Plato, who started 17th was also caught up in the first lap drama, tapping Kane gently but causing no significant harm. However there would be little joy for Plato as he fought home in ninth and lost out more points to Giovanardi in the championship chase, the Italian now 44 points clear at the top.
Jason Hughes put in a strong drive to finish 10th in the final points-paying position, having run eigth for much of the race.
