Mat Jackson has raced in the BTCC prior to 2007, albeit in the Production class way back in 2001. At the time he was racing a Ford Focus for GR Motorsport, but managed to help the team to win the Production Team's Championship. He was at the time still focusing on his studies in mechanical engineering. After that relatively low-profile first season in the BTCC it wasn't until 2005 that he made a full return to racing. Taking part in the respected SEAT Cupra Championship, Mat finished an impressive second in his debut season, finishing only 15 points behind eventual winner Tom Boardman. He stayed with the series into 2006, honing his skills further and taking the championship by almost 50 points over his next nearest rival!
For 2007 Jackson continued to race with his private, family-run team Jacksons Motorsport using the very BMW which fellow Brit Andy Priaulx drove to the World Touring Car Championship in 2006. A very impressive debut season led to 2 wins, including the final race of the season. The team once again acquired the latest Andy Priaulx world championship-winning car for 2008, and Jackson drove to his best season yet winning five races, as many as champion Giovanardi, on his way to second overall in the championship. For 2009 the team has lost the backing of main sponsor Accident Exchange, and with them the team name BMW Dealer Team UK, but Jacksons Motorsport hope to continue running the car at the very front of the field.
