Going from success to success, Kane was nominated for the 2001 McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year award, a prestigous trophy previously held by David Coulthard and Jenson Button, which he went on to win, in the process earning himself a test drive with the McLaren F1 team. After this his career began to gather pace as Kane entered higher profile championships.

Whilst Kane only contested two races in the 2002 Formula Renault UK Championship, 2003 saw him complete a full season in the Scholarship class of the British Formula Three Championship, in which he took 2nd in the championship. The same year he tested a Formula 1 car for McLaren at Silverstone. Contesting the Formula 3 Championships in Spain and England in 2004 and 2005, Kane showed promise in both years and moved on to the even bigger World Series by Renault for 2006, where he managed to take a season-best result of 2nd. Joining Motorbase Performance in 2007 as a stepping stone to the BTCC, Steven raced in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB and very nearly took the title, instead managing third overall with an impressive 7 outright wins. 2008 sees Steven step up to the BTCC as Motorbase upgrades its cars to the rear-wheel drive BMW 320si.
