Dave Pinkney returns to the BTCC for 2009 after having taken a break from the series in 2008. Pinkney has a long history in the BTCC, indeed he is the only driver on the grid who can claim to have competed in the series in the late eighties, before even super touring was around! Pinkney's deal to race one of the competitive S2000 Team Dynamics' Civics came about last summer, after team boss Steve Neal offered him the drive. With Chilton switching teams and the Halfords backing gone it presented the perfect opportunity for him to re-enter the series.

Pinkney first competed in the BTCC way back in 1989 when he raced one of the dominating Ford Sierra RS500's. It was a difficult year in a car that suffered from poor handling and unreliability, struggling to achieve good results despite its high straight-line speed. The following year Pinkney moved into production saloons to run his own car, this time a Ford Sapphire Cosworth. He continued with the car into 1991, with some success. Spurred on by this and the change in regulations in the BTCC, he decided once again to enter the touring car championship. However there were difficulties in developing his own car, a Ford Sapphire Cosworth, and he instead did another season in production saloons.

1993 finally saw Pinkney return to the BTCC again, this time in an ex-Prodrive, championship winning BMW 318is coupe. It was another year of mixed fortunes for Pinkney however and he only completed part of the season and ended up in 27th overall in the driver's championship. Pinkney left the championship at the end of the year and did not return again until 2001.

In the meantime Pinkney spent several years competing in one-make championships. Between 1994 and 1997 he raced in the Volkswagen Vento VR6 Championship, before moving into the Vauxhall Vectra SRi V6 Challenge in winter 1997. After having come close to the title in the Vento's, Dave finally claimed a championship in the Vectra one-make series, lifting the Winter Series trophy in 1997. He continued racing the Vectra through to 1999 when he took the main series overall championship.

2000 saw Pinkney take a break from racing. He returned in 2001 as the BTCC was entering a new era of regulations, agreeing to race one of the JSM Alfa Romeo 147's. The season was short-lived, as the car suffered from unreliability and was off the pace, and Pinkney only completed 8 races before leaving the team.
